Beatspan privacy policy
Beatspan keeps your music on your device. Your progress is kept in a save that Steam Cloud or iCloud can carry to your other devices under your own account, and on Steam your friends can see what you are playing. World rankings shares your best run of a song under your Steam name and picture, or on iPad your Game Center name; you can switch it off and remove what was shared in Settings. Error reporting helps the developer find and fix problems. You can turn automatic reporting off in Settings › Help and about.
Playing and saving
Beatspan works without an account. The game can be played offline. Your song files stay where you keep them, and Beatspan sends them nowhere. The history of your song scores, the recaps of your recent runs, and your best runs stay on your device, apart from what World rankings shares, described below.
Your settings, scores, campaign progress, and practice history are kept in one save file. It names the songs you have played by their file names in your songs folder, and keeps the title and artist of the last one. On Steam, when Steam Cloud is on, Steam keeps a copy of the save under your Steam account and carries it to your other computers; the demo and the full game share one save, so the demo's progress carries into the full game. On iPad, when you are signed in to iCloud, the save is kept in the game's iCloud storage under your Apple Account, so your other iPads, and a Mac running the iPad app, play from the same save. Your timing calibration describes the device and is never in the save, so it stays on each device.
While you play the full game on Steam, Beatspan tells Steam what you are doing, and Steam shows it to your friends (rich presence): the screen you are on, the world, groove, or mode you are playing and its tempo, the title of the song you are playing and its speed, and the on-time share of a run you just finished.
Steam handles its own purchase, account, achievements, cloud save, rich presence, and update services under its privacy policy. On iPad, Apple handles purchases, iCloud, and Game Center under its own.
World rankings
World rankings ranks your best run of a song against other players' and lets you play against the run just above yours. It is on by default. Switch it off in Settings › Gameplay › World rankings, and nothing more is sent or fetched.
While it is on, the Steam build asks Steam for a sign-in ticket and sends it to the Beatspan rankings server, which checks it with Steam and reads your Steam ID, your Steam profile name, and your Steam profile picture. The server keeps those three, the date you were last seen, and, for each chart and each setting of Timing windows, your best run: its score, accuracy, longest streak, where it ended, its date, tempo, and pads, whether a drum kit, keyboard, or controller played it, and how each note was judged and timed. Your best runs are ranked under your Steam name and picture, and other players can see them on a song's rankings and play against them.
On iPad, the game signs you in to Game Center and sends the rankings server your Game Center player ID, which Apple gives this developer's games alone, your Game Center name, and Apple's signature proving the ID is yours. The server checks the signature with Apple and keeps your player ID, your name, the date you were last seen, and your best runs, as it does on Steam, ranked under your Game Center name. It receives no picture, email address, or friends from Game Center.
A chart is identified by a fingerprint of its notes. The server does not receive song files, song titles, audio, or your song library. Beatspan does not keep your Steam sign-in ticket or Game Center signature. The rankings server runs on Cloudflare, which processes requests on the developer's behalf and necessarily receives the connection's IP address.
Your runs stay on the server until you remove them. Settings › Gameplay › Remove from rankings deletes your best runs, your name, and your picture from the rankings server and switches World rankings off. The best runs kept on your device stay. You can also ask the developer to remove them.
The website
The website, beatspangame.com, including the web demo's page, counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and does not identify or follow a visitor. It records the page, the referring site, the country, the browser, operating system and device type, and how quickly the page loaded.
The site's Steam and demo links count each click: which link, the page or site it was followed from, the country, whether the device was a desktop or a phone, and any campaign tags on the link. No address or identifier is kept with a click, so clicks cannot be tied to each other or to a person. The Steam link sends you on to the Steam store tagged with where it was followed from, which Steam may report to the developer as a count.
The web demo counts each visit from a tablet or phone once per browser tab: the kind of device (for example iPad or Android phone), whether the demo could hear a drum kit there, offer the keyboard instead, or neither, and the country. No address or identifier is kept with it.
Automatic error reports
When reporting is connected in a release build, Beatspan sends technical failure reports to Sentry for the developer to review. Automatic reporting is on by default. Reports contain the build and commit, platform, browser version and operating system family, current screen, limited activity settings such as chart seed and tempo, recent game actions, and a sanitized error stack. A random identifier groups reports from the same app launch; it changes on each launch and does not identify a player across sessions. Desktop reports can also include a process exit reason. An interrupted previous session does not necessarily mean the game crashed.
Beatspan does not attach song files, song titles, audio, screenshots, recordings, save files, device names, full filesystem paths, or raw MIDI messages to automatic reports. It does not use session replay, advertising tracking, or gameplay recordings. Network services necessarily receive the connection's IP address; Beatspan does not deliberately attach it as a player identity. Sentry processes reports on the developer's behalf.
Failed automatic renderer reports may be retained locally for up to seven days, with a limit of ten reports, and retried on the next launch. Turning automatic reporting off clears that queue and stops future automatic reports. It does not retract reports already sent.
Reports you choose to send
Report a problem is available from Pause, Settings, and session recovery. It sends the same limited activity context plus the category and any description or contact details you choose to enter. Writing and contact information are optional. Do not include passwords or other sensitive information. Sending a report is a separate choice and works even when automatic reporting is off.
The game only confirms receipt after the reporting service acknowledges delivery. An unconfirmed report leaves your words in the form so you can retry. Player-written report drafts are not saved across a restart.
MIDI diagnostics
Beatspan reads MIDI messages from connected drum modules to respond to your playing. Raw messages are processed locally. Settings also offers a diagnostic report that you can copy yourself. That report may contain connected device names, pad mapping, calibration, and recent pad hits. It only goes where you choose to paste it; it is not attached to automatic reports or the Report a problem form.
Access and retention
Reports are available to the developer and authorized service providers for troubleshooting and support. A private development issue may link to a report. Contact details and player-written descriptions are not automatically copied into development issues. Reports follow the retention period configured in Sentry; local retry data expires after seven days. Contact the developer with your report reference to ask about access or deletion. Avoid entering personal information about children or other people in a report.
Your choices
You can play without sending automatic reports, and you can choose whether to send an individual report. Deleting a save does not delete reports already delivered to Sentry. Automatic reporting preferences are stored separately from game progress. Contact the developer to request removal of delivered reports.
Changes
Reporting and rankings changes are disclosed in release notes and this policy before the corresponding build ships.
